Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s most prominent hedge funds, has partnered with Global Citizen, an international advocacy organization, to launch a new global economics challenge titled Forecasting the Future: A Modern Economics Challenge. The initiative invites participants worldwide to submit predictions and analyses focused on the ongoing global economic shift from decades of globalization to what Bridgewater terms Modern Mercantilism.
This new economic era is characterized by increased protectionism, redefined trade relationships, and the integration of disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence. The challenge asks applicants to forecast how this transition will impact countries, industries, and populations, and to assess the resulting risks and implications for policymakers.
Key details:
-
Top 100 submissions will be shortlisted based on forecast quality.
-
Top 5 winners will each receive $25,000 and an internship or job opportunity at Bridgewater (subject to successful interviews).
-
Submissions will be reviewed first by Bridgewater and Global Citizen, with senior investors at Bridgewater selecting the finalists.
Quotes from leadership:
-
Nir Bar Dea, CEO of Bridgewater Associates:
“We are looking for the brightest minds across the world to contribute their understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.” -
Hugh Evans, Co-Founder & CEO of Global Citizen:
“With Forecasting the Future, we’re inviting bold, data-driven ideas from around the world – because the next breakthrough insight can come from anyone, anywhere.”
This initiative follows last year’s collaboration between Bridgewater and Global Citizen on research for the World Bank’s IDA21 replenishment, which secured a record $100 billion commitment. The 2025 challenge reflects their shared mission to address major global issues by fostering new ideas from diverse contributors across the globe.
