Boko Haram Founder’s Son Among Six Arrested in Chad

Chadian authorities have arrested Muslim Mohammed Yusuf, the youngest son of the late Boko Haram founder, alongside five other individuals suspected of being part of a jihadist cell. The arrest was confirmed by an intelligence source and a former insurgent, though Chadian police would only confirm the detention of six Boko Haram members without specifically identifying Yusuf as the founder’s son.

The Islamist group, founded by radical preacher Mohammed Yusuf, has been a source of terror in the Lake Chad region for approximately 15 years. Recently, the group has been responsible for increasingly bold attacks on villages and military installations.

A Nigerian intelligence source in the Lake Chad area told AFP that Muslim Yusuf, 18, was leading the six-man cell. The source added that the cell is affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group of Boko Haram. Muslim Yusuf, who reportedly uses the alias Abdrahman Mahamat Abdoulaye, is the younger brother of ISWAP leader Habib Yusuf, also known as Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi.

Muslim was an infant when his father was killed in a 2009 military crackdown that resulted in the deaths of around 800 people.
