CBS is set to make history with the debut of “Beyond the Gates,” the first Black soap opera in 35 years, premiering on February 24. This milestone marks a significant moment in daytime TV, following the conclusion of “Generations” in 1991.
The show’s first teaser, released on December 16, offers a glimpse into the luxurious world of the Dupree family, a symbol of Black excellence living in a gated community just outside Washington, D.C. The drama series explores the complexities of power, prestige, and family dynamics.
The cast includes Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie as Vernon and Anita Dupree, the patriarch and matriarch of the family. Their daughters, Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnee Duplaix) and Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley), navigate their personal and professional lives amidst the complexities of their family’s legacy.
“Beyond the Gates” was written by Michele Val Jean, known for her work on “General Hospital” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” The show began production in November and is expected to make a significant impact on broadcast TV.
Sheila Ducksworth, president of CBS Studios’ NAACP venture, emphasized the importance of this series, stating, “This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television.”
With its diverse cast and thought-provoking storylines, “Beyond the Gates” is poised to break new ground in daytime TV and provide a fresh perspective on the Black experience.
