Bayer Leverkusen has dismissed head coach Erik ten Hag just two matches into the 2025–26 Bundesliga season, following a disappointing start that saw the club give away a two-goal lead in a 3–3 draw against 10-man Werder Bremen. The decision exposes deep-seated issues with team discipline and leadership. The draw came after a 2–1 home defeat to Hoffenheim earlier in the season.
Ten Hag, who signed a contract through 2027 after replacing Xabi Alonso in May, started his tenure with a promising 4–0 DFB-Pokal victory over SG Sonnenhof Großaspach. However, the team’s poor league performances have led to his swift exit, making his one of the shortest managerial stints in recent Bundesliga history.
Assistant coach Rogier Meijer will take temporary charge of the team’s training and match preparations until a permanent replacement is appointed.
The sacking of Ten Hag adds to a recent trend of managerial instability involving former Manchester United managers, with José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær also losing their roles in recent weeks. Leverkusen now faces the challenge of steadying their campaign and finding a long-term coach capable of guiding the team back to stability.
