Barcelona Midfielder Frenkie de Jong Signs New Deal Until 2029

Barcelona has officially announced that Dutch international midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract, extending his commitment to the Spanish champions until 2029.

The 28-year-old, who joined the club from Ajax in 2019, is now in his seventh season with the Catalan giants, having already won two LaLiga titles and the Copa del Rey twice.

In a statement, the club expressed its confidence in the Dutch star: “Barca are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part of the current sporting project due to his quality and experience.”

De Jong on Living the Dream

De Jong expressed his satisfaction at extending his stay, emphasizing that playing for Barcelona was a lifelong ambition.

“I always dreamed of playing for Barca, and now that I am living the dream I have always had since I was a child, I want to continue pursuing this dream for many more years, and I am eager to win titles,” De Jong told a news conference.

The midfielder has become a crucial part of the midfield under coach Hansi Flick, playing alongside Pedri Gonzalez.

Addressing Salary Speculation

De Jong, who was once one of the club’s highest earners and resisted attempts to be sold during cost-cutting measures in 2022, reportedly accepted a pay cut in his new deal, which will commence in the 2026/27 season.

He took the opportunity to address media reports about his high salary, stating they were highly exaggerated and had negatively affected his public perception among fans.

“I will not tell you what I will earn, they’ve always talked about it a lot but I think that numbers regarding what I earned before have been exaggerated a lot,” he explained. “I think that has affected a bit how people see me, because if they read in newspapers that Frenkie earns this, that he’s the player who earns the most money in Europe… it has an impact.”

Despite the media scrutiny, De Jong maintained that he feels supported within the team and the club: “I don’t feel under-valued by my teammates, coaches or within the club, that’s more (a media) thing. That’s the beauty of football, everyone can have their opinion.”

De Jong has made over 250 appearances for the club since arriving in 2019.
