Apple Music has announced The Sounds of Africa, a global campaign spotlighting the vibrant musical ecosystems of Accra, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg. This bold initiative celebrates Africa’s undeniable influence on the global music stage and aims to honor the distinct sounds and cultural richness of each city.
At the heart of the campaign are five specially curated playlists — each designed by local artists, tastemakers, and industry leaders. These playlists blend new and classic tracks that embody the soul of their respective cities. Complementing them are exclusive DJ mixes, offering immersive soundscapes that traverse the rhythms of each location.
The Sounds of Lagos
As the powerhouse of Afrobeats, Lagos leads with an electric playlist curated by names like Don Jazzy, Asa, and Bizzle Osikoya. “Lagos is rich in sonic history — there’s hustle, love, revolution, and hope in the air,” Don Jazzy shares. Spaceship Billy’s DJ mix fuses nostalgic anthems with global breakout hits, capturing the city’s enduring pulse.
The Sounds of Johannesburg
The birthplace of kwaito and a cultural hotbed of amapiano, Johannesburg’s playlist is shaped by voices like Kwesta, Nandi Madida, and Samthing Soweto. The mix, crafted by DJ PH, showcases the city’s grit, soul, and unmatched creativity. “Run Jozi sounds exactly like the city’s heartbeat — fast, gritty, unapologetic,” Madida says.
The Sounds of Accra
Accra’s playlist pays homage to its deep-rooted traditions in Highlife and its modern innovations in Afrofusion. Curated by Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Ma.nifest, and others, it’s a tribute to the city’s musical duality. “These talents stretch from indigenous Ghanaian music to Western black music,” Stonebwoy explains. DJ AD’s mix reflects the city’s high-spirited energy and celebration of life.
The Sounds of Nairobi
Nairobi’s playlist, shaped by Nikita Kering, Xenia Manasseh, and Njerae, captures the city’s emotional depth and rebellious creativity. “There’s a free nature in Nairobi revealed through our music,” says Xenia. DJ Grauchi’s mix features rising stars and timeless tracks that still echo across the city’s vibrant streets.
The Sounds of Dar es Salaam
Marioo and Harmonize present a sonic tapestry that reflects Dar’s warmth, romance, and street energy. From smooth coastal vibes to electrifying street-party sounds, DJ Vasley’s mix takes listeners on a musical journey through Tanzania’s cultural capital.
With this initiative, Apple Music not only celebrates the cultural wealth of Africa but also amplifies its role in defining global music trends.
