Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is seriously considering retirement from professional boxing, according to statements made by his uncle, Adedamola Joshua.
The 36-year-old boxer’s outlook on the sport has reportedly shifted following the fatal car accident in Nigeria last Monday, which claimed the lives of his close friends and training associates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
Family Support for the Decision
Speaking during a visit to the family home in Sagamu on Monday morning, Adedamola Joshua expressed the family’s relief at the prospect of Anthony hanging up his gloves.
“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing. That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally,” Adedamola told The Punch.
The family cited the immense emotional trauma they endure during his high-stakes bouts as a primary reason for their support of his exit.
“Each time he’s knocked down, it is just like the heart is coming out of our chest… Now that he has said that he’s leaving while the ovation is highest, we are happy.”
Commitment to the Bereaved Families
Beyond his own career considerations, Joshua has demonstrated deep loyalty to those lost in the crash. He has officially committed to providing lifelong support to the families of both Ghami and Ayodele.
Breaking the Silence
After nearly a week of mourning, Anthony Joshua broke his public silence on Sunday. He took to Instagram to share photographs of himself with the bereaved relatives, marking a somber and respectful return to the public eye.
While an official statement from Joshua’s management or promoter, Eddie Hearn, is yet to be released, the confirmation from his inner family circle suggests that one of the most celebrated eras in British heavyweight boxing may be coming to a close.
