Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja following her arraignment on charges of cyberbullying her colleague, Mercy Johnson-Okojie. Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling on Friday, admitting the actress to bail despite opposition from the prosecution.
The Charges: Cyberstalking and Defamation
Angela Okorie was re-arraigned on a seven-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation. The prosecution alleges that these offenses were committed between 2024 and 2025, in violation of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015.
The actress pleaded not guilty to all seven counts after they were read to her in court.
Bail Conditions and Court Ruling
In his ruling, Justice Nwite noted that the prosecution failed to provide concrete evidence that the defendant would jump bail if the request were granted. Consequently, the court set the following conditions for her release:
- Bail Sum: N5 million with one surety in the same amount.
- Surety Requirements: The surety must be a Level 13 civil servant and provide an affidavit of means, an appointment letter, and a letter of their last promotion.
- Documentation: Both the actress and her surety must submit two passport photographs to the court registrar.
- Verification: The residence of the surety must be verified by the court registrar.
Current Status and Trial Date
While the bail has been granted, Justice Nwite ordered that Angela Okorie be remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the full verification of her bail conditions.
The court has adjourned the matter until March 23, 2026, for the commencement of the trial. During the proceedings, the police lawyer, Victor Okoye, indicated that the prosecution is ready to present witnesses to establish their case against the actress.
