Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed he has no intention of resigning but admits that a swift return to positive results is crucial to maintaining his position at Old Trafford, following a devastating start to the season.
The Portuguese coach, aged 40, is under intense scrutiny after a string of poor performances that saw United crash out of the League Cup in the second round to English fourth-tier side Grimsby Town. This early exit follows a deeply disappointing 15th-place finish last season, which resulted in the club failing to qualify for European football.
The Pressure Intensifies
Amorim’s side currently sits in 14th place in the Premier League table, trailing leaders Liverpool by eight points after securing only seven points from six matches. In his 33 league games in charge, the manager has tallied nine wins, 17 defeats, and seven draws.
Speaking ahead of the crucial home fixture against promoted side Sunderland, Amorim clarified his stance on quitting:
“No, that is a decision of the board. I cannot do that (resign).”
He acknowledged the pain of defeat, stating, “It’s so frustrating when you create the momentum, go to the next game, something happens… But that is not my decision and I think it would be really hard to leave if I don’t do everything to follow my career here.”
Focus on Results, Not Job Security
While committed to fighting for his role—calling it “a dream to be here”—Amorim insisted his primary suffering comes from the team’s performance, not fear of unemployment.
“The problem is now what makes me suffer is to lose games, not to lose my job,” he stated.
However, the manager, who confessed he is not “naive,” concluded by acknowledging the harsh reality of managing a club of United’s size: “We understand that we need results to continue the project. We will reach a point that is impossible for everyone because this is a very big club.”
