The United States of America (USA) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, announced a $142 billion arms deal as President Donald Trump lifted longstanding sanctions on Syria.

The $142 billion deal was announced on day one of President Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

Both nations also announced several other investments that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said could be worth about $1 trillion.

Trump and the Crown Prince signed an agreement covering energy, defense, mining, among others.

President Trump is on a tour of the Gulf region and will visit Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE) before returning to the US.

Speaking in Riyadh, Trump said the US has “no stronger partner” than Saudi Arabia.

President Trump spoke at a US-Saudi investment forum, praising the US-Saudi relationship as “more powerful than ever before”.

He also praised his domestic agenda – particularly as it pertains to the US economy and foreign investment.

According to him, “From the moment we started we’ve seen wealth that has poured – and is pouring – into America.”

Trump was joined by billionaire friend Elon Musk and other business leaders at a lavish lunch.

Sanctions On Syria

In his address in Riyadh, Trump announced that America would be lifting sanctions on Syria in order to give the Middle East nation “a chance at greatness.” He pointed out that it was his “dream” to have Saudi Arabia join the Abraham Accords, a deal brokered in his first administration that saw relations between Israel and some Gulf countries normalised for the first time.

America declared Syria a state sponsor of terrorism in 1979, added sanctions in 2004 and imposed further sanctions after the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Shibani wrote on X that the planned move marked a “new start” in Syria’s path to reconstruction.
