Algeria’s Gen Z Revives Hirak Spirit Amid Growing Discontent

Algeria may be entering a new season of protests as unresolved tensions from the 2019 Hirak movement resurface.

Under the banner “GenZ213,” young Algerians have called for nationwide demonstrations on Friday, October 3, to denounce worsening political and socio-economic conditions. Viral posts on social media suggest the movement seeks to rekindle the energy of the 2019 Hirak, which forced former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika from power.

Political analyst Oualid Kebir reports that peaceful marches are planned after Friday prayers across several provinces, voicing frustration with corruption, economic stagnation, and the ruling elite’s tight grip on power.

Algeria’s economic crisis deepens as youth unemployment surpasses 30%, inflation erodes purchasing power, and meaningful political reforms remain absent. With oil and gas revenues in decline, the younger generation—often described as “sacrificed”—appears increasingly determined to lead a new wave of dissent.

The renewed mobilization comes as state media criticize Morocco’s handling of its own youth protests, underscoring a stark contrast with Algeria’s internal unrest. Calls to march toward El-Mouradia, the presidential palace, highlight the symbolic weight of the movement.

Observers remain uncertain whether Generation Z can overcome the regime’s entrenched repression of dissent. Yet, the shadow of the Hirak still looms over Algiers and other cities, signaling that Algeria’s unresolved political stagnation may again erupt—despite the government’s efforts to project itself as a “geopolitical voice” abroad.
