The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has filed official petition with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA over controversial refereeing decisions in Algeria’s 2025 AFCON quarterfinal defeat to Nigeria.
According to FAF in a post on X, the calls by Senegalese referee, Issa Sy, damaged trust in African refereeing.
The Federation has therefore asked for an investigation.
Furthermore, the Algerian FA is calling on CAF to ban referee Issa Sy and remove him from the ongoing Afcon with immediate effect.
Algeria lost 2–0 in the quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon, with Nigeria’s goals scored by Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.
The match ended in chaos, with arguments involving players and officials, as well as an attempted pitch invasion. CAF says it has opened an investigation and referred the case to its Disciplinary Board.
But in its statement on X, FAF said “The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally.”
It added that “Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations.”
