Nana Akufo-Addo, former President of Ghana, has arrived in Cotonou to head the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission ahead of Benin’s presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026.

Akufo-Addo touched down on Wednesday, April 8, at Cotonou International Airport, where he was received by senior regional and diplomatic officials, including Abdel-Fatau Musah, Amadou Diongue, and Alhaji Mohammed Abubakari Manaf.

As head of the ECOWAS Electoral Observation Mission, Akufo-Addo will oversee a broad deployment of election monitors across Benin. The mission includes 20 long-term observers, 80 short-term observers, and 25 young professionals who will be stationed nationwide on election day to assess the conduct of the polls.

The deployment is in line with ECOWAS protocols on democracy and good governance, which guide member states in ensuring transparent and credible electoral processes.

Speaking to journalists upon arrival, Akufo-Addo reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting a peaceful and credible election in Benin. He emphasized the regional bloc’s role in safeguarding the democratic will of the people, noting that the mission aims to promote transparency, stability, and public confidence in the electoral process.

The April 12 vote is seen as a significant test of democratic resilience in Benin, with regional and international observers closely watching the process.
