The project to strengthen the early warning and response capacities of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), has officially entered its active phase.
This was announced at a retreat that commenced on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Zuma Rock in Niger State, Nigeria.
The project’s overarching goal is to enhance ECOWAS’ ability to detect, anticipate, and prevent human security crises across West Africa—thereby contributing to peace, stability, investment, and development throughout the region.
More specifically, the initiative seeks to make prevention a central principle in early warning and crisis response strategies, integrate gender and climate change considerations into the early warning system for a more inclusive approach, and strengthen the region’s capacity to withstand climate shocks and other sources of fragility.
