Ademola Lookman has been crowned the 2024 African Footballer of the Year, joining an illustrious list of Nigerian footballers who have claimed the prestigious award. Lookman, 27, edged out stiff competition from Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, and Ronwen Williams to claim the title.
The Atalanta star had a phenomenal season, scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final to secure his club’s first-ever European silverware. He also played a crucial role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals in the tournament.
Lookman’s victory marks Nigeria’s sixth triumph in the award’s history, with Victor Osimhen being the most recent winner in 2023. Other Nigerian footballers who have won the award include Nwankwo Kanu (1996 and 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), Emmanuel Amunike (1994), and Rashidi Yekini (1993).
This achievement is a testament to Lookman’s exceptional skills and contributions to both his club and country. His impressive performance has earned him recognition among the continent’s best footballers.
