Adele to Swap Music for Acting in Tom Ford’s Film Debut ‘Cry to Heaven’

Global music superstar Adele is set to swap the stage for the screen as she makes her feature film debut in Cry to Heaven, the next movie by acclaimed designer and filmmaker Tom Ford.

The film will be adapted from Anne Rice’s 1982 novel, which is set in the 18th-Century world of the “castrati”—male singing stars who were castrated to preserve their high voices. Ford will direct, produce, and write the film, though specific details of Adele’s role have not yet been revealed.

Star-Studded Cast

Adele will appear alongside a glittering ensemble cast, highlighting the high profile of the project. The co-stars include:

  • Nicholas Hoult
  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson
  • Colin Firth
  • Paul Bettany
  • Owen Cooper (Adolescence breakthrough star)
  • Ciarán Hinds
  • George MacKay
  • Mark Strong
  • Hunter Schafer
  • Thandiwe Newton

Adele’s Creative Break

The move into acting comes after Adele, one of Britain’s most popular music stars, released her last album four years ago and completed her Las Vegas residency a year ago. She had previously announced plans to take “a big break” and pursue “other creative things just for a little while,” making her film debut a highly anticipated result of this time away from music.

Tom Ford’s New Focus

Tom Ford, who sold his self-titled fashion house in 2022, has officially stepped away from the fashion world to focus entirely on filmmaking.

“I loved making the two films that I made. That was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life,” he told GQ.

Ford has directed two highly acclaimed and stylish films previously: A Single Man (2009), starring Firth and Hoult, and Nocturnal Animals (2016), which earned him two Bafta nominations. Cry to Heaven is expected to continue his tradition of visually striking and provocative cinema.
