Nigerian singer and fast-rising Afropop star Fave has opened up about the surprising decision to officially release the viral AI-generated version of Intentions, a song originally by the music duo Urban Chords.
The AI rendition, which circulated widely on social media earlier this year, replicated Fave’s vocal texture so convincingly that many listeners assumed she had recorded the track herself. Instead of ignoring the trend or issuing a takedown, Fave chose to embrace the moment, seeing it as a crucial connection with her fanbase.
The Rationale: Owning the Fan Narrative
Speaking on the decision, Fave explained that the overwhelming reception helped her understand how deeply fans connected with the sound they thought belonged to her.
“People kept tagging me and saying the song felt like something I would sing,” she said. “At first, I was shocked because it wasn’t me. But the more I listened, the more I understood why they loved it.”
According to her, the massive fan excitement led her to make the song real: “I saw how excited people were, and I didn’t want that excitement to die. Instead of running from it, I decided to own it. If fans already believed in the song, why not make it real?”
Respecting Creativity and Guiding the Narrative
Fave emphasized that the decision was made after consulting with Urban Chords and her team, ensuring respect for the original creators.
“It was important to respect the original creators,” she said. “Urban Chords did something beautiful, and I wanted my involvement to be a collaboration, not confusion.”
She concluded by outlining her goal to strike a balance between creativity and technology while ensuring artists remain protected and respected.
“AI is here whether we like it or not,” she added. “But if it’s going to use my voice, then I want to guide the narrative and make sure the art still has heart.”
The official version of Intentions marks a significant step in the evolving relationship between African artists and AI music technology, one that Fave hopes will inspire more transparency, innovation, and collaboration within the industry.
