Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says its upcoming Compliance Summit 2025 will focus heavily on strengthening technology-led regulatory practices across the country’s capital market, as regulators and industry players adapt to rapid shifts in digital finance and emerging risks.
The conference, scheduled for next week in Lagos, builds on the momentum of the 2024 edition and will bring together capital market operators, self-regulatory bodies, regulators, FinTech innovators, and compliance professionals. The theme for this year—“Innovation and Compliance: Balancing Risks and Opportunities”—reflects the SEC’s push for data-driven compliance frameworks capable of supporting a fast-evolving market landscape.
Technology Takes Centre Stage
In a statement, the SEC said the summit will promote advanced compliance measures such as RegTech, data analytics, real-time transaction monitoring and risk-based supervisory mechanisms. These tools, it noted, are essential as digital financial services expand and new players, including Virtual Asset Service Providers, enter the ecosystem.
The Commission stressed the growing importance of compliance officers, describing them as key guardians of market integrity and crucial to ensuring that institutions remain responsive to regulatory changes.
Strengthening Governance and Market Transparency
The SEC said discussions at the summit will deepen industry knowledge on issues such as beneficial ownership transparency, enhanced customer due diligence, anti-money laundering measures, and the countering of terrorist financing (AML/CFT). Delegates will also examine new expectations for boards and senior management, who are increasingly required to embed compliance into the core of strategic decision-making.
According to the Commission, the forum will offer an “unmatched opportunity” for industry leaders to review the implications of the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, which introduces updated compliance standards and responsibilities for market participants. Expert-led sessions will dissect anticipated regulatory changes and identify gaps that institutions must address to remain compliant.
Adapting to a Digitised Market
As digitisation accelerates, the SEC emphasised that multi-stakeholder collaboration is essential for navigating new vulnerabilities. The summit will feature engagements on how Nigeria can strengthen public–private cooperation while expanding the use of technology-driven risk management tools.
The Commission added that participants will develop both short-term and long-term implementation strategies for the new law, ensuring clarity, alignment, and practical solutions for market actors across the board.
With Nigeria’s financial landscape increasingly shaped by technology, the SEC says the 2025 summit aims to provide a forward-looking roadmap that equips the capital market to manage risks without stifling innovation.
