Nigeria: Visitor Arrested for Allegedly Smuggling Illicit Drugs Hidden in Cooked Food into Prison

Security personnel at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Agodi, Ibadan, have apprehended a man accused of attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the facility by concealing them in cooked food.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Oyo State Command, Mr. Olanrewaju Anjorin.

Drugs Hidden in Rice and Pasta

According to the statement, the suspect—who presented himself as a visitor to an inmate—was stopped during routine security screening at the prison’s entrance. Officers conducting standard checks on visitors and their belongings reportedly discovered substances suspected to be Colorado (a synthetic strain of cannabis) and hemp hidden inside a portion of cooked rice and pasta.

Officials said further questioning raised doubts about the man’s stated reason for the visit, suggesting an attempt to bypass established security procedures.

Handed Over to Drug Enforcement Agency

The suspect has since been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for detailed investigation and possible prosecution under Nigeria’s drug control laws.

The Controller of Corrections for Oyo State, Mr. Olusegun Osogun, praised the alertness and professionalism of the officers involved, noting that their vigilance prevented contraband from entering the custodial facility.

Commitment to Prison Security

The NCoS reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict security standards across custodial centres in the state. Authorities emphasized that routine screening procedures are designed to prevent the entry of prohibited items, including drugs, weapons, and other contraband that could compromise inmate safety and institutional order.

The Command also appealed to members of the public to comply with correctional facility regulations and avoid actions that could attract criminal penalties.
