Police in Niger State have taken a 50-year-old man into custody following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in the Angwan-Daji area of Minna.
The suspect, identified as Usman Abubakar, was arrested after a complaint was lodged with the authorities, according to a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

How the Case Came to Light
Police said the case began when the boy’s mother noticed that her son appeared physically uncomfortable and was unable to sit properly. Concerned, she questioned him about his condition. The child reportedly mentioned a local meat seller in their neighborhood.
The suspect was subsequently identified and arrested by officers attached to the ‘A’ Division in Minna.
Investigation and Confession
According to the police statement, the suspect allegedly admitted during interrogation that he lured the boy to his shop with roasted meat before committing the offence. The child has since been taken for medical examination, while the suspect remains in custody pending further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police for Niger State, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, condemned the alleged act, describing it as sexual assault and gross indecency. He assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Call for Vigilance and Child Protection
The Police Command urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children to help prevent similar incidents. It also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including child protection agencies, the Ministry of Women Affairs, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), and the judiciary, to ensure the safety and protection of minors.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
