Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has confirmed that he has undergone surgery following a knee contusion, opening up about a challenging period in his career marked by injury setbacks and emotional strain.
The Nigeria international disclosed the development on Saturday through a series of posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he shared both personal reflections and updates on his recovery. Boniface revealed that he has been masking his struggles for months, describing the past year as particularly difficult.
“Been putting fake smile for almost a year,” the forward wrote. “But God know why all this is happening. Grateful to God.”
In a separate post, the Bayer Leverkusen attacker confirmed that the surgical procedure had been completed successfully. While maintaining his trademark humour, Boniface encouraged others not to give in to despair during tough times.
“BBL done and dusted,” he wrote, before adding a cautionary note about mental health and resilience. “Omo if e reach your turn make depression wound you,” a colloquial expression urging people not to surrender to depression regardless of circumstances.
Boniface also expressed appreciation to fans, teammates, and supporters who reached out following the announcement, acknowledging the emotional support he has received throughout his injury ordeal. “Thanks for the messages,” he added.
A Season Disrupted by Injuries
The surgery marks the latest chapter in a difficult run for the 24-year-old forward, who has struggled to maintain consistent fitness over the past year. Boniface has been managing knee-related issues in addition to other injuries, which have limited his availability both for club and country.
In June 2025, PUNCH Online reported that Boniface was ruled out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a serious abductor injury on the eve of the tournament in Ivory Coast. The setback was a major blow to both the player and the Super Eagles coaching crew, as Boniface had been expected to play a key role in Nigeria’s attack.
His absence from the AFCON squad added to a growing list of missed opportunities at international level, despite his impressive performances in Europe when fit. At club level, Boniface has been widely praised for his physical presence, movement, and goal-scoring instincts, qualities that helped him establish himself as a fan favourite during his breakthrough season with Bayer Leverkusen.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
Neither Boniface nor his club has released a detailed timeline for his return to action, but the successful completion of surgery is expected to be followed by a structured rehabilitation programme. Medical experts often stress that recovery from knee contusions can vary depending on severity, response to treatment, and workload during rehabilitation.
For Boniface, the focus now appears to be on long-term fitness rather than rushing back into competition. His recent comments suggest a renewed determination to overcome adversity, while also highlighting the mental toll injuries can take on professional athletes.
