Tems Reveals She Has Surpassed Her Own Dreams: ‘I’ve Achieved Beyond My Dreams from When I Had a 9-5’

Nigerian global music sensation Tems has revealed that her success has already surpassed her own initial aspirations for a career in the music industry. The Love Me Jeje singer shared this sentiment during a recent fan Q&A on X (formerly Twitter).

When asked what she is currently looking forward to and whether she had achieved her dreams before stardom, Tems responded:

“I’m looking forward to whatever the Lord has in store and honestly I’ve achieved beyond my dreams from when I had a 9-5.”

From Digital Marketer to Global Icon

Tems began her music journey after leaving her job as a digital marketer in January 2018. She released her debut single, Mr Rabel, later that year, but her global breakthrough arrived in 2020 when she was featured on Wizkid’s single Essence.

The song gained international acclaim, notably reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 following a remix with Justin Bieber.

Unmatched Grammy Success

Tems holds a unique and powerful position in African music history:

  • First Grammy Win (2023): Tems became the first female Afrobeats artist to win a Grammy, taking home the Best Melodic Rap Performance award for her collaboration with Future and Drake on Wait For U at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
  • Multiple Grammy Wins (2025): She followed this up in 2025 by winning the Grammy for Best African Music Performance, making her the only Nigerian artist with multiple Grammys.

Tems has also earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for co-writing Rihanna’s theme song Lift Me Up (from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), further cementing her status as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished and influential music exports.
