107 Persons Die In DR Congo As Whaleboat Sinks, 146 Others Missing

Some 107 individuals have died in DR Congo as a whaleboat sank after reportedly catching fire.

Reuters first reported about the deaths, citing an internal report by the Congolese government.

According to the report, the boat, a double-ended open vessel caught fire on the Congo River near Malange village in Lukolela territory on Thursday evening, September 11, 2025.

DR Congo’s Ministry of Social Affairs said in a memo that 146 people remain missing.

Rescue teams were however able to recover 209 survivors. Several of the people who survived are with injuries.

The boat is said to have burnt and drifted downstream.

The fire from the boat destroyed cargo and burned 15 homes near the river.
