Violent clashes between South Africans and foreigners in the town of Addo within the Eastern Cape of South Africa, has reportedly left at least four people dead.
Local media reports say 10 other people have been hospitalized due to injuries they sustained during the clashes.
Allegations are that a number of foreign nationals killed a local man during a fight at a tavern on Saturday night, May 24, 2025 and that the locals retaliated yesterday, Sunday, May 25, leading to three more deaths.
The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) cited an unnamed Zimbabwea as saying he saw some locals converging yesterday morning and then there were running battles in the streets.
According to the Zimbabwean man, a number of foreign nationals then fled to the police station for safety overnight.
He says: “People were running all over and some were running for dear life, some were injured, some were murdered, some were in hospital. I only saw one guy, the one I came close to, near Mfazomyama, the other guys I see them from afar. In the night, we decided no, it is not safe, so we decided to come here, I decided around 02h00 to sleep here.”
Meanwhile, South Africa Police Service (SAPS) has deployed specialised units to prevent any further bloodshed.
