The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States with a new format and rebranding, is at risk of being one of the tournament’s least successful editions due to poor ticket sales and security concerns. According to The Athletic UK, ticket sales have been underwhelming, with fewer than 25,000 tickets sold for the opening day. The opening match between Inter Miami and Al Ahly on June 14, 2025, in Miami, expected to feature Lionel Messi, is far from sold out, leading to significant price reductions to boost sales.
The Athletic reported, “Unfortunately for FIFA, the paying public aren’t rushing to buy into it. Adam Crafton reports that the opening match, between Inter Miami and Egyptian team Al Ahly in Miami on June 14, is struggling to sell out. The game, likely to feature Lionel Messi, is nowhere near capacity, so ticket prices are being cut.” Questions arise about whether FIFA’s model, led by Grafstrom, is failing to resonate, despite FIFA president Infantino’s prior dismissal of concerns, claiming he was “not worried at all” about ticket sales. FIFA notes that fans from over 130 countries have purchased tickets, and Grafstrom emphasized the tournament’s potential to expand football’s reach in the U.S.
Additionally, security concerns for travelers have emerged as a significant issue, potentially impacting attendance further. It remains uncertain whether these challenges will hinder the tournament’s success, casting doubt on what was anticipated to be one of club football’s biggest events.
