Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that Ghana risks having around 180, 000 unemployed trained health workers by 2028.

He made this known in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Point of View show.

According to him, if steps are not taken to address the current growing backlog, the country would have 180,000 of its trained health workers without jobs.

He explained that the current number of unemployed health workers in Ghana stands at around 74,000.

However, he said, with thousands more graduating each year, the figure is expected to more than double within the next three years.

He noted that “By the end of 2026, we have an additional 23,000. By the end of 2027, we have an additional 35,000. By the end of 2028, we have about 47,000. So by the end of 2028, if we don’t employ anybody, this 74,000 is still outstanding — we will have not less than 180,000 trained and they will be at home.”
