Authorities in Ghana have arrested 14 individuals who allegedly engaged in examination malpractices during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Those arrested, according to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), include teachers, students, and invigilators.
Addressing journalists at a press conference, the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council, John Kapi, says the arrests were made at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, among others.
Kapi said the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi had been shut down after mobile phones were confiscated, adding that candidates there have been relocated to the WAEC regional office to continue the exams.
He says arrests continue to be made, citing several cases of malpractices.
He disclosed that two university students and impersonators were arrested at Kasoa in the central region and jailed six months each, while their accomplice, a teacher was jailed eight months.
According to him, additionally, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for creating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions with students.
In Abura Dunkwa, Kapi reported that one Ebenezer Fynn, was arrested for impersonation and is facing further investigation.
According to him, results of candidates from schools in which the arrests have been made will be subjected to strict scrutiny.
He noted that WAEC remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the exams and will not hesitate to take stringent measures against malpractice.
