The captain of the Ghana Amputee Football team, Richard Arthur Openti, has lamented that the team was denied the chance to see President Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Youth and Sports upon their return from Egypt, leaving them with no choice but to meet Former President John Mahama who generously donated $10,000 to them for winning the Amputee AFCON.
He revealed that the Sports Ministry never seemed interesting in allowing to meet the Minister or President Akufo-Addo until they met Mr. Mahama.
According to Openti, “We kept asking for an opportunity to present the trophy to the Minister and the President, but we never got it until we met the Ex-President, which prompted them to call us. This is sad because our colleagues from other countries are handsomely rewarded for winning tournaments, but we go through this for our nation.”
Openti was reacting to Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif’s displeasure about the team meeting former President John Mahama first and not the Sports Ministry.
Mr. Ussif had said: “When you come after the successes and there’s anything, the first point of call is this office [MoYS]. We’re not going to tolerate you using the state for your personal benefits.”
