In a historic moment for South African cinema, The Last Ranger has been shortlisted for the prestigious 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Cindy Lee, the IsiXhosa-language short film is one of 15 contenders vying for a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category for the 2025 Oscars.
The film delves deep into the urgent issue of rhino poaching and conservation efforts in South Africa. It follows the journey of young Litha (Liyabona Mroqoza) and the last remaining ranger, Khuselwa (Avumile Qongqo), as they traverse a game reserve. Their mission takes a dark turn when poachers ambush them, leading to a fierce battle to protect rhinos and the uncovering of a devastating secret.
Director Cindy Lee shared her excitement about the recognition:
“To have an IsiXhosa film about rhino poaching in the running for an Oscar makes me so proud! This film is unique and deserves to go all the way,” she said.
