Over 1,000 pilgrims have died from heatwave in Saudi Arabia, according to a report by the AFP.

About 658 of the pilgrims who have died at this year’s Hajj were reportedly Egyptians.

According to reports, unregistered pilgrims accounted for more than half of those who died. Out of the 658 pilgrims from Egypt who died, 630 were reportedly unregistered pilgrims.

Most of pilgrims accordingly succumbed to heat-related diseases.

Reports say thousands of pilgrims are also being treated for heatstroke as temperatures in Mecca increased to 49 degrees celcius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).
