President Joseph Boakai officially launched Liberia’s first national resource center dedicated to persons with disabilities in Brewerville, Kpeko Town. This significant milestone marks a major step forward in the Liberian government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and advancing the rights of the disabled community.
President Boakai emphasized the importance of recognizing the inherent humanity of individuals with disabilities, calling on society to treat them with dignity and respect. “We must regard those with disabilities as our equals, deserving of respect and support,” he stated. The President also acknowledged the evolving nature of disability, stressing the need for resilience in facing future challenges.
During his address, President Boakai reflected on his recent visit to the Christian Association of the Blind, where he witnessed substandard living conditions. He expressed his deep concern and announced immediate plans to renovate the facilities and improve living standards. “What we saw was heartbreaking; the conditions were inhumane, akin to living like animals,” he revealed.
The President also issued a strong warning to government officials regarding the misuse of public resources. He called for greater collaboration with law enforcement, lawmakers, and senators to ensure national resources benefit all citizens equitably. President Boakai reaffirmed his government’s commitment to infrastructure development, emphasizing the need to make all community roads accessible to all Liberians.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the Second Lady, has secured $5 million for the construction of 200 housing units, a high school for Group of 77 students, and a specialized healthcare facility. President Boakai extended his gratitude to partners who have supported the government’s initiatives and praised Second Lady Madam Stephenie Dahn Koung for her tireless efforts in advocating for the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities.
