The Ghanaian Government is set to reintroduce road tolls, the country’s Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has confirmed.
According to him, Cabinet has approved the reintroduction of the road tolls.
Speaking during the country’s mid-year budget review in Accra on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said while there will be no new taxes in the budget, vehicle owners in Ghana will begin paying road tolls once again.
According to him, “The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia] mentioned that these road tolls should be reconsidered. Already, the Minister for Roads has received Cabinet approval to start the process of reintroducing these tolls. I say I don’t think that immediately these tolls are going to be reintroduced. I think that they’re going to give an indication of a road map for the reintroduction.”
On November 18, 2021, the Government of President Nana Akufo-Addo scrapped road tolls in Ghana. The move was aimed at reducing traffic congestion at tollbooths as well as part of efforts to implement the country’s e-levy.
