South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has reached a historic agreement with the main opposition party, Democratic Alliance (DA) to form South Africa’s first Government of National Unity (GNU).
The Sunday Times, South Africa’s biggest Sunday newspaper, reported on its website that the parties reached a deal shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday.
The deal was reached during the first sitting of the National Assembly, The Sunday Times reported.
A report by South African Broadcasting Corporation on Friday, June 14, 2024 said the GNU shall include the Patriotic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
Under the deal, the DA will get the post of the Deputy Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly.
Reports said the current President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa was scheduled to be elected Friday afternoon since a deal has been reached.
