South Africa’s Deputy Higher Education Minister, Mimmy Gondwe, has sounded the alarm on unregistered educational institutions in South Africa, vowing to clamp down on those exploiting vulnerable students seeking affordable education. Gondwe’s warning comes as she visits unregistered colleges and private institutions of higher education in the Durban CBD, an area with the second-highest concentration of tertiary students in the country.

The Department of Higher Education and Training is receiving complaints about unregistered institutions nationwide, prompting Gondwe to declare war on these bogus colleges. “We are declaring war on unregistered institutions that rob people of their money, time, and the opportunity of getting a job,” she emphasized.

Gondwe urged parents and learners to exercise due diligence when selecting educational institutions. “We keep two registers – one for private colleges and one for private institutions for higher education… Sometimes, they can even walk into a college to come and check if registration certificates are displayed or if the accreditation details are displayed, and to speak to the learners.”

To combat the issue, the department is collaborating with the eThekwini Municipality, SAPS, and the Departments of Employment and Labour and Home Affairs to launch an awareness campaign against bogus colleges in Durban CBD.

Students are advised to verify the registration and accreditation status of institutions before enrollment. For further information, they can contact the Department of Higher Education and Training via email (RegistrarFET@doe.gov.za) or phone (0800 872 222).
